A Natural Product Number identifies a licensed natural health product. It is worth checking the product behind the number before using it in labels, supplier records or an Amazon response.
Check the specific licence
Use Health Canada's Licensed Natural Health Products Database to review the product record. Compare brand name, licence holder, formulation, dosage form and conditions of use with the goods being sold.
The regulations describe the particulars set out in a product licence. A licence for one formulation or set of conditions should not be treated as permission for another product.
Keep site responsibilities separate
An NPN is a product identifier. Manufacturing, packaging, labelling and importing activities have their own Canadian site-licensing requirements. Read the site-licensing guidance for the relevant business and activity.
Make the product file clear about which business is the licence holder and which is the manufacturer or importer. The same brand name appearing on documents does not resolve those roles.
Check the label and listing
For the label's number designation, consult section 91 of the regulations. Match the number and licensed conditions to the label and the Amazon page. Record unexplained differences for review before proposing changes.
For an Amazon request, preserve the licence evidence, final label and notice together. A regulatory licence and marketplace document review remain separate processes.
Revisit the file after changes
When an ingredient, dose, claim, label or responsible business changes, identify which licence and document questions need review. Keep the previous version so the record explains what product each decision covered.
